Our History
Songhai Press was founded in 1992 by author and publisher, Derrick Gantt. Motivated by the alarming lack of diversity and cultural relevance of texts made available to early readers and young people, Mr. Gantt sought to provide a new source of life-affirming, fun-to-read, educational books for children in order to welcome them into the world of learning and literacy.
Mr. Gantt's own dream and determination has grown with increasing breadth and success through focused efforts and the energetic support of community and professional partners.
The Songhai Press story is one of innovative partnerships and responses tailored to meet the needs and requests of the educators, children, and communities that we serve. Beginning with a personal mission and a self-published book, Songhai Press Corporation has sprung into a full-service educational partner whose work is on the very forefront of our nation's continued development toward meaningful and relevant education for all.
About Our Logo
The Songhai Press Corporation logo is the baobab tree. This "Tree of Life" lives for thousands of years and could quite possibly be the continent of Africa's oldest inhabitant. The enormous baobab tree seems almost indestructible and provides a myriad of uses for both people and animals across the continent.
